Miller's Crossing
Inspiration Everywhere: A Door Can Make the Room
Wednesday, July 8, 2009

The movie Miller's Crossing is renowned for its fascinating plot but what we were fixated on was Gabriel Byrne's stylish 1930s era apartment. The spare, clean furniture, the hardwood floor, the luscious drapes...and that elegant bedroom pocket door.

Not only were the double oak sliding doors that disappeared into the walls a beautiful touch, but they're a space saving inspiration. And just like Byrne's bedroom in Miller's Crossing, you may have a special door in your home...a door that turns a unique room into the heart of your dwelling place.

Herewith, a list of some of our favorite unique doors:

The Pocket Door

Pocket doors are great when there’s no room to swing a door outward or inward. A pocket door has no hinges and slides into a groove in the wall.  Any door, including a French door, can now slide into a pocket. Just remember that your door handle must be flat or recessed.

Pocket doors are also good for handicapped access, as there’s no door swing to interfere with wheelchairs or crutches.

The  Multi-Fold Door

A multi-fold door can work as a useful alternative to a traditional sliding glass door, especially when you're dealing with a wide space that shows off a beautiful view.

Multi-fold doors open accordion-style. Do some research to obtain the most reliable track system for easy opening and long wear.

The Architectural Salvage Door

If you can afford it, salvaged doors can provide an unparalleled uniqueness to your home.

As with vintage interior doors, these are doors that have been salvaged from older sites. They can be from churches, barns, old homes, stores or elevators. There are dealers who gather such jewels from all over the world.

Glass or Vanishing Walls

If you have a gorgeous backyard or pool area, why would you hide it behind a wall? With new technologies available, you can open up your family room to bring the outside in. Marvelous for parties and entertaining, large glass walls or disappearing walls can open up a vast amount of space to the outdoors.

Most systems consist of folding and sliding French doors—enough of them to compose an entire wall. They can accommodate a curved wall or corner wall, as well as travel in a straight line. Heavy-duty tracks, ball-bearing glides and locking systems provide easy movement and durability. The doors also offer full weather protection.
