Hanging kitchen pots
Inspiration Everywhere: Julie and Julia

We’ve seen the Julie & Julia trailer a number of times now, and aside from making us hungry, it has made us nostalgic. For Julia Child’s wonderful show, for her hilarious quips like “I hate health food," and for the occasions on which we actually tried to make one of her rich, flavorful recipes. The film’s production design – particularly that of Julia Child’s world (as inhabited by Meryl Streep) – is one of 70’s-chic Parisian restaurants, dark, ambient apartments, and, of course, kitchens. Kitchens with copper pots and pans on the walls. Kitchens with large butcher-block islands. Kitchens full of the joy that comes from having a passion for good food and good company.

In our homes, the kitchens are indeed at the pulse, even if the nightly fare is somewhat less gourmet than Ms. Child’s. And when we saw the trailer we were reminded that our kitchens, for that reason, might warrant more ongoing TLC than other rooms in the house. And the end result is worth it. Julia Child once said “It's fun to get together and have something good to eat at least once a day. That's what human life is all about – enjoying things.” Cheers to that.
