A Designer's Picks for Sustainable Fabrics

In the “Renew, Reuse, Recycle” series, we’re taking a look at some of my favorite eco-friendly products that I like to use when designing a sustainable home. Here are three fiber and synthetic collections that are good for the earth and will look exquisite in your home.

1. Maharam Fabric Corporation (maharam.com) has been in business since 1902. The company has distinguished itself with its reduced-environmental-impact fabrics and chemical-free finishing of products.

Why I love it: The fabric and furniture can be used together as the designers envisioned as a classic blend of form and function. Maharam’s “Textiles of the 20th Century” collection was perfect for one of my clients who is a passionate collector of mid-century modern furnishings.

2. Most decorators prefer natural fibers to synthetics. Now the industry is all abuzz with excitement for felt. The textile offers myriad uses from home furnishings to fashion to architectural elements, and is an inherently sustainable resource made by matting wool fibers together. The Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York City showcased the Relief Chair, a felt creation by the designer, Ben K. Mickus (mickusprojects.com). I recently installed this chair in the home office of one of my clients, who calls it his “idea” place.

Why I love it: I love its durability, intensely bright colors and texture, and have been using it for pillows and upholstery in all types of rooms.

3. Some fabric companies are producing green collections made from 100 percent recycled polyester. Kravet Fabrics (kravet.com) is manufacturing a fabric that is a unique blend of post-industrial and post-consumer fibers. The fabric is woven and treated with no additional chemicals, and is even recyclable after being used.

Why I love it: There won’t be crayon marks on your sofa in the family room anymore! Clients love these fabrics for their patterns, durability and stain repellent features.
