Color can incite so many emotions. It can be relaxing, reflective and quiet. It can also be emotional, rich and playful. Not content with a neutral color palette, when it came to decorating our new place in Los Angeles, I knew that one thing I wanted to use was bold, environmentally responsible color.
The range of beautiful, luscious eco-friendly interior paints available today makes for a mouth-watering selection of color to suit any interior décor concept. Most large paint manufacturers carry an environmentally friendly range of paints. I chose to use Yolo Colorhouse who carries a small, yet stunning range of colors. I love their full-scale paint samples that you can hang on the wall and move from room to room. When we cracked open a gallon of their interior paint, I was surprised by its thick texture and depth of color. After applying two coats of paint to the walls, I’m thrilled with the luminous color and velvety touch of the finished surface.
So how do you select an eco-friendly paint? Check that the type of paint is water-based and contains no or zero VOCs. VOCs stands for Volatile Organic Compounds, and can best be equated with the off-gassing, chemical odor than certain materials and paints release as they dry. Zero VOC paints do not have a lingering odor, making spaces that you paint liveable and pleasant as soon as the paint has dried. As we spend on average 90% of our time indoors, the interior spaces we live work and play should also be as healthy as possible. Indoor air quality and natural materials are very desirable attributes and can reduce environmentally induced sicknesses or allergies.
