It’s amazing what blogging has done to my design psyche. I used to keep my “decorating stream of consciousness” to myself, except when involved in client projects or consultations, or sharing my passion for beautiful things. Now, when I'm inspired by a stunning room, catalogue or magazine spread, I can’t wait to write about it.
I had such a moment yesterday when I received the latest trade catalogue from the well-known fabric resource Zimmer + Rohde (zimmer-rohde.com). The cover shows an elegant chair and table covered in shades of gray. The effect on the space is intimate and quiet, and the patterns are soothing.
In contrast to this, other photos show a bench covered in a graphic black and white print and a dining room in a stark setting. One room is palatial and the other sparse; their effect is dramatic!

This brings me to my favorite rooms. They are a mix of elegant and modern furnishings; the fabrics are solid in highly contrasting colors. A primary ingredient is an added dose of bold pattern on a chair, bench or pillow, and always great accessories.

Whether you're a fan of pattern or solids, color or none, their combinations determine a room’s mood. When I design a space, I think, “How would I feel if I lived here? What do we want this room to say?” Ask the questions before you decorate and you'll come up with some interesting, fanciful and enjoyable ideas for your home.
