Inspiration Everywhere: Macram

Macramé. The word alone takes me back to an aunt’s living room, circa 1976, in which every corner was adorned with crafty hemp plant-holders with willowy ferns. For added effect, imagine a 5’3” woman with long black hair (aforementioned aunt) sitting Indian-style on a Navajo rug leading the family in a Carole King sing-along.

There, scene set.

Or so I thought, until I realized that there is something undeniably NOW about macramé, too. I guess it’s to be expected. If wide leg pants and across-the-forehead headbands got their second 15-minutes, there’s no reason a respectable and functional decorative art like macramé shouldn’t as well.

Funny thing is, today’s macramé – dare I say it – is kind of cool. Behold these images, below, which are full of macramé inspiration, and you might find yourself fern shopping by week’s end.
