My husband and I have been searching for the perfect coffee table for five years. It's starting to sink in that there may, in fact, not be a coffee table in existence that will satisfy us both. (Thank goodness it wasn’t this hard choosing a name for our kid). For him, he feels our living room works better without one -- he likes end tables and sparcity. For me, I want a place to put my coffee. Literally. And a piece of furniture that will pull the room together.
But, as with most marital negotiations, one must choose their battles. And given that five years of "suggesting" has gotten me nowhere, I’ve moved on to a coffee-table substitute. Namely, the ottoman.
Ottomans can serve very similar purposes as traditional coffee tables. With a tray on top one can certainly hold your drinks. They are a fine place to stack one's art books or magazines. And best yet, they provide a comfortable place to prop one’s feet.
Also a plus -- they come in fun shapes, patterns and textures that give a little zing to a room. I'm banking on that zing to seal the deal with my husband. And the feet-propping part, too.
